Algarkirk is a small parish in the south eastern part of rural Lincolnshire. The parish has a population of about 400 which is scattered throughout its 2,600 acre boundary. The actual village is on the extreme western boundary and dominated by its magnificent Parish Church, dedicated to St. Peter & St. Paul.
Algarkirk is a farming parish and most of the population are engaged in the industry or its allied trades. Whilst the village has no shop, post office or pub, these facilities can be found in Sutterton, some 1/2 mile away. However, there is a flourishing farm shop just across the A16 main road, approx. 1/4 mile from the village centre.
The village was once served by Algarkirk and Sutterton railway station; this was closed in the early 1960's and the line has been rebuilt as the A16 Boston to Spalding road, which was opened in 1991.
Algarkirk is called after Algar, Earl of Mercia, who fell at Stow Green near Threekingham in 870 while resisting the Danes; he is reputedly buried in the graveyard of the Parish Church. "Kirk" comes from the Old English meaning church.
